Ironically, from first reporting on girls basketball in 1975, I later coached at the junior and senior levels for close to 15 years, starting out at Mount St. That Bawating girls team of 1975 featured a starting five of guards Jacquie Fairbrother, Cheryl Donnelly and Barbara Meier and forwards Helen Vukovich and Natalie Vukovich, with Jennifer Martin coming off the bench to play a lot of minutes for coach Marg Holgate. I covered as many girls basketball games as I could that year, right up to the championship game at Bawating when the Braves edged Collegiate by one point to win the title. And when it was over, I headed back to the radio station to voice tape a game report that would air on the next day’s morning and noon sportscasts. So, with the blessing of my boss, the aforementioned Paul Leonard, I set out to cover my first girls high school basketball contest. Both local media giants were big on reporting about boys high school sports and, of course, major junior hockey, but very little attention was given to girls sports. I specifically asked sports director Paul Leonard if we could cover girls basketball as I had noticed that the other local media - specifically CJIC Radio-TV and The Sault Daily Star - paid little attention to girls sports. The first ever game I covered for CKCY was a senior girls high school basketball match at Bawating between the Braves and the Collegiate Kittens. It was early in October of ’75 that I started working for CKCY Radio, covering high school sports and being the weekend sportscaster. And being that I landed my first job in the local media 47 years ago this month, back in 1975, I thought I would reflect a bit on a career that has taken me from radio to television to the newspaper and website business. God willing, I will turn 70 years of age in a few days, Oct.
And I started my media career in October, 1975. Because I love the fall season, October has always been a favourite month of mine.
